Poker is a card game played between at least two players and, in most forms, up to 14. The object of the game is to win the pot, which consists of all bets placed during any round. Each player contributes chips representing money into the pot based on their position at the table. The players place their bets by calling, raising or folding. There are many different forms of poker, but the basic rules are the same in all.<\/p>\n
The game begins with one or more forced bets, usually an ante and blind bet (or both). A dealer shuffles the cards and deals them to each player, beginning with the player on their left. The cards may be dealt either face down or face up, depending on the variant being played. The first betting round then commences. Each subsequent betting round is referred to as a turn. A player can raise, call, or fold his or her hand at any time during a turn.<\/p>\n
The cards in each player’s hands form his or her 5-card poker hand. Each player must use the two cards in their hand plus the five community cards revealed on the board to make the best possible poker hand. The strongest hands include three of a kind, straights and flushes, while the worst hands are singletons or pairs of unmatched cards. It is important for a player to understand the strengths and weaknesses of their own poker hands as well as those of the other players.
